Solid discussion of whether or not to take books at “face value.” I agree covers are one way to be selective. My bigger beef, though, is I think in general publishers could do a lot better job creating compelling covers. Many covers are pretty uninspiring and do not make particularly good use of graphics. Sometimes it seems like the cover is getting the least marketing attention despite its importance.
