Phil, as a Boomer, I want to comment on your perspective about my generation. I am one of those people you kindly refer to as mentoring and giving back. I started and ran my own business and when I retired I chose to help other small business owners by becoming an unpaid marketing consultant through a small business center at a community college. I also volunteered at two local nonprofits. I mention this because I object to characterizing my entire generation as selfish and uncaring. I have met many Boomers who have equaled or exceeded my effort to give back.

That said, I am a Boomer who actually agrees with you that it is time to pass the political torch to younger generations. I think Biden is indeed getting a bad wrap for being too old because he has accomplished a great deal that is good for the country. His likely opponent, a few years younger, is so obviously mentally unfit that there is no comparison, in my opinion. Still, I wish we had two younger candidates who were experienced and rational about what this country really needs.

The real problem, however, is that all branches of our government are controlled for the most part by older white men who do not represent the American electorate. The Senate is a great example of a body that is in great need of younger blood and term limits.

So I applaud your passion and enthusiasm for a government run by younger generations—as long as they don’t perpetuate the same failed policies that got us into a lot of messes made by older generations. It is not so much that Boomers in general have screwed up the country, in my opinion; rather, it is a group of older, power hungry professional politicians who care more about getting re-elected than about doing the right things.
