It goes without saying that what Gertrude did took great courage and compassion. Aside from her obvious talent, she was breaking away from a male dominated society in which her work was unusual and likely frowned upon. In addition, her subjects were widely considered to be savages at the time, so I imagine having them in her studio and treating them as equals was in itself scandalous. Another superb story of an unsung hero photographer.
