Great nostalgic piece, Lee. I remember On The Beach and the Tommy James song very well. I agree that "Sounds of Silence" is a great symbol of the Sixties. But I'd vote for Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" as the song that defined our generation's angst.
