Great article, Marmi. I think we could make a case for “ugly” characters in movies (and books from which they are derived) who may scare kids but have humanity and therefore redeeming qualities. “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is one such character who comes to mind and shares similarities with “The Elephant Man.”
