Excellent observations, Simon, and I completely agree.

It seems to a certain extent contemporary filmmakers have gotten lazy, or perhaps they just assume music is less important these days. Obviously, they are mistaken. Films of yesteryear relied heavily on music not just for themes but as an integral part of the action, comedy, romance and suspense.

It isn't surprising that some of the best cinematic music is lifted directly from stage musicals (as in "West Side Story" which I wrote about). Great music from the stage can translate very well into film when handled properly.
