Excellent observations, Sally. I too have seen a reduction in civility in ways large and small. I do think we can blame social media for much of it because it depersonalizes our interactions. I also think part of it comes from people who are selfishly expressing their own feelings while being insensitive to and uncaring about others. Whatever the reasons, your commitment to being polite is smart, if for no other reason than to set a good example.
