1. My favorite historical figure is Franklin Roosevelt. I have often wondered what it would be like to lead a country out of a depression and into a major war. In my view, Roosevelt was a transformative figure who made some of the most difficult yet forward-thinking decisions to lead the U.S. during its darkest time. The New Deal was clearly one of the most innovative ways to guide the country. Its impact continues to be felt today through the many improvements to the country's infrastructure that are still in existence.

2. Not only can you judge the past through today's lens, it is important to do so, in my opinion. Looking back on what happened and when, with a contemporary perspective, allows us to understand the why of history. Understanding past events allows us either to repeat them (if positive) or avoid them (if negative). It is important to learn from the lessons of the past -- so the present can lead to a more informed future.
